The Blog
What We Write About
The Earl of Bricks started as a review site, but the reviews kept raising bigger questions. Why does one 1,500-piece set feel like a masterclass in SNOT technique while another at the same price point feels like bag-filling? Why do some sets retain value for years while others hit clearance six months after release? Why are certain themes catnip for AFOL builders and ignored by casual buyers? Those questions are what the blog is for.
The articles here are built around what I actually think about when I'm building - not press releases, not the LEGO marketing calendar, not set reveals dressed up as editorial. The categories reflect how a serious builder actually relates to the hobby.
Technique covers the mechanics of building - SNOT, stud reversal, half-plate geometry, techniques worth stealing from official sets and applying to your own MOC work. These articles go deep because the surface explanation is always insufficient. When a set does something clever with plate layering to create a curved surface, there's a method there worth understanding, not just admiring.
Collecting and Investing examines what happens to sets after the shelf. Some themes appreciate predictably - certain Creator Expert sets, discontinued Icons, limited-run licensed builds. Others crater. The investing articles look at the signals that distinguish the two: production runs, theme longevity, the size of the fan community, and the difference between a set people buy to build versus one they buy to keep sealed.
Culture is the catch-all for everything that makes this hobby strange and wonderful - the community debates, the AFOL/casual divide, the economics of a toy that costs more per piece as the sets get larger, the way certain themes attract obsessive collectors while others get no traction. These pieces tend to run long and cover territory the mainstream hobby press ignores.
Therapy documents something I did not expect when I started building seriously: LEGO as a legitimate cognitive and emotional tool. I have seven long-form articles on this already, backed by real research. Sensory processing, executive function, anxiety reduction, pediatric OT applications. The hobby turns out to have clinical weight. These articles are the most-shared things I've published.
Stud.io covers digital building - using the BrickLink design software to prototype, plan large MOC builds, and explore part availability before committing real money. It is a different skill set from physical building and worth developing separately.
Every article on this blog is written by me, Robert Earl. I've been building since I was seven. I'm not a journalist covering LEGO from the outside - I'm a builder who happens to write. That distinction shows up in what I choose to cover and how I cover it.
